The Beat Hijack #3.1: Who are you really?

Writer's picture: The Beat HijackerThe Beat Hijacker

SEPTEMBER 2018

NOTICE: Original Music and all rights to it by Mikky Ekko. This is a personal project for no commercial gain.

After the last Beat Hijack, I fully intended to move onto a new one. I actually got the new track ready and started jotting down ideas for the new, yet to be released hijack. However, the previous hijack wasn't quite done with me.

I just kept coming up with material related to the Mikky Ekko track. I thought a lot about how much of an influence the past and particularly experiences and things learned early in life, perhaps in formative years can have on who a person is in the present.

What are the things that people hold onto for a long time that perhaps would make them different if they let them go? What are the things really going on underneath when people tell you they're "ok"? It's something I've been exploring on a personal level, letting go of the past, getting better at being vulnerable and letting people in and its what spilled out in the 2nd verse I wrote for this Beat Hijack.

I think I would give these verses a different title from the hijacked track if they were to be performed outside of this format....but still working on that.

Verse 1

I’m somebody's progeny, Nobody's daughter The lamb for the slaughter, The self was the offer I am the other, for them to discover Who am I? They must bother, to look just under All of the years living under the cover, "Protected", but really just trapped underwater Learn to breathe again, one breath then another It's hard to recover cuz I'll never tell, No-one can tell, am I alive or living inside of this cell, I've hidden well Perception disorder, in here I can yell In silence, no listeners, I'm ringing that bell NOW I AM THE FIRE, NOW I AM THE SWELL Lost in wilderness, is where I have dwelled Now I am the water from deep in the well AND I'M A SURVIVOR, THESE CHAINS I REPEL

Verse 2

When I learn to unlearn all the lessons I’ve learned, Then my freedom is earned Confessions can turn things that should have long burned Into ashes, DUST, to return to the urn Uncertain, what is behind the curtain, confirm, what is hidden to be certain, Discern, what to embrace...or to leave spurned What I should keep...and what to return Peel off the fake to reveal what is real Living is now, there can be no deal Letting it go is how to begin to heal Letting it in is me beginning to feel, and how...from sleep did I wake, Lifetime habits are the hardest to break To wear a brave face is the biggest mistake When it’s time to escape to find, all that time, that I was guard at the gate
